As your local Member of Parliament since 2010, local residents in Byfleet and West Byfleet have raised their concerns over the noise pollution from the M25.
For many decades, over 30,000 residents in Byfleet, West Byfleet, Pyrford, New Haw, Ottershaw and Addlestone have suffered from this M25 noise pollution. As I suspect that you are aware, there is a constant tapping noise as cars and lorries travel over the M25 concrete slabs which have damaged joints and the current surface on this stretch of motorway dates all the way back to when it was originally constructed in 1984.
I can now confirm that National Highways have written to me with confirmation of their commitment to repair and improve the noisy and bumpy stretch of the M25 between junctions 10 and 11 over the next 3 years.
I have been working with a local ‘M25 Action Group’, which was formed by local residents to lobby Highways England (now National Highways) with the ambition to secure an appropriate repair or resurfacing of this stretch of the M25 between Junctions 10 and 11 from National Highways.
You may recall two petitions that were created by the Action Group, one for residents to sign and one for drivers also affected by the bumpy surface and noise. The petitions were signed by thousands of people across Surrey. The Action Group presented the M25 resurfacing petitions to 10 Downing Street, along with myself and indeed, very shortly after the successful petitions, I secured a debate in Parliament to discuss these issues. This Westminster Hall Debate took place in late March 2020, further helping to highlight the need for action to protect local residents.
Later in 2020, the M25 Action Group was pleased to hear that National Highways had instructed Connect Plus to carry out trials on the M1 to test various alternative concrete surface treatments. The objective of these trials was to provide definitive data to assess the compliance and performance of various different treatments to improve concrete roads. The trial concluded at the end of 2022 and representatives from National Highways and Connect Plus attended an M25 Action Group meeting in March 2023 to share the topline results.
National Highways have now confirmed the excellent news that they would now almost certainly be working towards repairing the stretch of the M25 between Junctions 10-11, and that they would write to myself to formally confirm this news and to outline the proposed timelines and the surface treatment that would be used.
I am delighted to say that this letter has now been received!
Once the works complete, it will significantly mitigate the problems of noise and the uneven surface that residents and motorway users have had to put up with for far too long and I could not be more pleased that we’ve secured such a positive result for local residents.
