Unfortunately, due to the rainfall which is forecast to fall in already saturated catchments, there is potential for flooding within the Woking area over the next few days. The Environment Agency are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further information to Jonathan in due course. The Environment Agency’s primary responsibility is to respond to fluvial flooding (from the river), however, they are working with partners, including Local Authorities and Local Resilience Forums, to respond to all potential sources of flooding and manage the impacts of the rainfall. The Environment Agency’s operational teams have already been busy clearing trash screens and blockages, checking and operating flood risk assets and ensuring rivers and streams are flowing freely.
Jonathan encourages all local residents to remain vigilant and keep a close eye on media reports and weather forecasts. Residents in affected areas are advised to listen to the advice of the emergency services and think about the precautions they can take to protect their properties. Motorists are also urged to stay alert to potential dangers and not attempt to drive through flood water – 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car. Before travelling, please plan your journey and check whether you are at risk of travelling through areas that are flooded or liable to flood.
