As part of their ongoing project, The Woodland Trust is awarding over 3 million trees to community projects over the next few years.
St Mary's Church in Byfleet were delighted to be granted 60 saplings to plant at the church owned greenbelt land at 3 Acre Field in Byfleet. These trees were gifted as part of the commemorations marking 100 years since the end of WW1.
The project was run by Rev John McCabe and Lynn Cozens with the aim being to create a lasting legacy which would enhance the field with an attractive area of woodland and which would also provide food and shelter for wildlife. A variety of trees were provided by The Woodland Trust including wild cherry, elder, silver birch, hawthorn and dog rose trees.
On the beautiful, crisp, sunny morning of Saturday 17th November, over 50 volunteers came to help plant the new trees. Jonathan was accompanied by Local Councillors, Amanda Boote and Mary Bridgeman in helping to plant the trees.
Jonathan commented 'I was, of course, delighted to join the St Mary's Church community in planting their saplings. I look forward to seeing the cherry tree I panted grow as part of a new area of woodland to be enjoyed by our local community.'
Each tree planted had a label attached to it for a name, message or dedication to be written.
As part of the same project, Jonathan has also recently planted new trees at Brookwood Farm with the help of Local Councillors Ayesha Azad, Kevin Davis, Saj Hussain, and Melanie Whitehand.
