March 2023
Dear Constituent,
Thank you for writing to me regarding the Government’s commitment to natural conservation in the UK and Woking.
The Environment Act 2021 set out a commitment to halting natural decline by 2030. The UK is also dedicated to protecting 30% of its land by 2030. Investment Zones include the ability of local leaders to adjust the investment plans to any local requirements, which will further help to preserve the environment.
Woking’s woodland is heavily protected. The entire area surrounding Basingstoke Canal as well as other areas such as Brookwood Cemetery and Lower Knaphill are designated conservation areas, and almost all of our local heathlands have excellent protection as well.
The Retained EU Law Bill does not hinder the Government’s commitments to environmental protection. There is existing UK law to protect dormice and bats’ habitat, enforced by fines and imprisonment if broken.
The Government’s manifesto guaranteed an investment in farming of £2.4 billion a year during this Parliament. The Environmental Land Management Scheme pays for sustainable farming practices. It is focused on rewarding farmers whilst reducing carbon emissions and improving animal welfare. It is a key element of the 25-year plan to reach the net zero goal.
Thank you again for writing to me.
With best wishes.
Kind regards,
Jonathan Lord MP
Member of Parliament for Woking
