February 2023
Dear Constituent,
Thank you for writing to me about the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill.
In January 2022, the Government announced plans to bring forward a Bill to create a more innovative regulatory regime that would not have been possible were the UK still a member of the European Union. The Bill will enable the Government, via Parliament, to amend retained EU law more easily, and to repeal and replace EU law where this is believed to be the best course of action. It is envisaged that the Bill may also include a sunset date by which all remaining retained EU law will either be repealed or assimilated into UK domestic law, but this will ultimately be a matter for very careful consideration.
I have had correspondence from constituents on a number of issues and concerns regarding the Bill, and have been raising these in discussions with relevant ministerial and parliamentary colleagues. Please find attached a “Dear Colleague” letter I have received from Nusrat Ghani MP, Minister of State for Industry and Investment Security, whose ministerial portfolio this matter falls within. Minister Ghani goes into detail to address concerns on matters such as worker’s rights, environmental protections and maternity rights, and I do hope you find the letter sensible, reassuring and informative.
I have also attached a briefing pack put together by experts at the House of Commons Library for your perusal. The House of Commons Library is an impartial service providing expert advice to parliamentarians and others, and they have provided some more specific details and explanations of the legislation, which I have found useful and I hope that you do too. You can access the briefing pack here.
Thank you again for bringing your concerns to my attention.
With best wishes.
Kind regards,
Jonathan Lord MP
Member of Parliament for Woking
